Review: Dear Zoo live!

We were kindly gifted tickets to see the theatre production of Dear Zoo Live! by Kiddo Adventures

About the Show

We caught the Hippodrome Birmingham show. The show runs for approx. 55 minutes with no interval (so keep that in mind and make your toilet/snack pitstops before the show).

As you probably guessed the show is a live adaptation of Rod Campbell’s best-selling lift-the-flap-book which follows the story of a young boy being sent animals from the Zoo in hopes he’ll eventually receive the perfect pet. The show features a mixture of costumed actors, puppets and HUGE props.

Our Verdict

Dear Zoo was on of my sons first books and we were so excited to see it live! I was wondering how a five minute story with few words could be adapted into an hour live show but it worked. I don’t think there was a moment where my sons eyes weren’t glued to the stage.

The show remains true to the book through and through and follows the exact timeline of events in the book. The set design was a large scale replica of the books bright and colourful illustrations and it felt like we’d stepped into one of my sons beloved favourites. I loved how they used cardboard cut-outs instead of puppets and a homage to the lift-the-flaps in the original book. The show also had quite an educational element to it too - every so often the audience (full of kids) were invited to count and sound out the letters of words. Overall, we really enjoyed it - it was funny, upbeat and really engaging! If you're heading down to a show (and i really recommend that you do!) expect lots of audience participation and entertained toddlers from beginning to end! You can find a snippet of our visit here
